Development and implementation of an effective air pollution forecasting and monitoring system based on AI technologies with the use of data acquired from an extensive measurement network

Smog is taking its toll on us, especially in large cities, with Kraków at the forefront. Not without reason has a start-up company from Kraków named Airly developed technology to precisely measure and forecast air quality.

The founders of Airly are graduates from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków. It is here and in a growing number of other locations throughout Poland that nearly 1,000 of the company’s sensors have been installed. These high-quality sensors are contained in metal boxes, which can be easily fixed almost anywhere and are used to measure the concentration of suspended particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10), the air temperature, atmospheric pressure and humidity. The data from all the sensors is gathered, analysed and published on a special platform, map.airly.eu/en/. When combined with information on the wind direction and force, it can determine the current state of the air, forecast and generate relevant warnings.

‘We are independent of the state monitoring system. Our strength is cheap and precise devices that can be fixed in every school, kindergarten, in the park or at a busy intersection. The data collected by us is available to everybody 24 hours a day,’ said Wiktor Warchałowski, the company’s co-founder.
